Teacher Feature: Steve James

Since January 2013, Nebraska Christian has been blessed to have Mr. Steve James of Hastings, Nebraska, come aid as a college counselor. Mr. James’ job at Nebraska Christian is working primarily with seniors on college transitions, scholarships, and working with recruiters on campus. Mr. James said he had heard of Nebraska Christian while he worked at Hastings High, but he knew nothing about it until after his retirement. Mr. Josh Cumpston, who had previously worked with Mr. James at Hastings High, asked him if he would like to go to China to recruit students to Nebraska Christian. While they were in China, Mr. Cumpston asked him if he would like to come to Nebraska Christian once or twice a week to help the juniors and seniors prepare for life after high school.

In his free time, Mr. James enjoys running, reading, riding his motorcycle, and spending time with his family – his wife Cheryl and daughters Alison and Holly. Romans 8:28 says, “We know that all things work together for the good of those who love God: those who are called according to His purpose.” Mr. James says that this verse is something he relies on every day in this crazy world.

When asked about his thoughts on Nebraska Christian, he said, “This place is like an oasis in the desert. I pinch myself every time I drive on campus that I get to work here. The difference is that NC staff can speak truth into the lives of students each day in a very direct way.” Having the blessing and freedom to speak truth into young people’s lives is something very rare and valuable in this world today. Students and staff at Nebraska Christian are blessed to have Mr. James be a part of this school and look forward to the years to come with Mr. James’ service.
