Speech Season Underway

The speech season has started, and many passionate speech members are ready to perform their speeches. Returning members to the speech team are Wendy Bornmann, Trang Doan, Rachel Epp, Jessica Hilderbrand, Makenna Loy, Katie Nyberg, Cole Ruybalid, Morgan Schulze, Grace Wu, and Isabella Yang. New participants on the team are Danae Burdett, Gladys Choi, Jeremiah Ebel, Madison Felt, Sydney Fuehrer, Corina Ge, Sophie Guo, Alex Hao, Melinda Kim, Kyle Kim, Lydia Langemeier, Rinrada Masatit, Samuel Twogood, and Jake Twogood.

The three coaches are looking forward to what the season will bring. “We are excited to have 10 returning speech members and 14 new and enthusiastic team members. I can’t wait to see how much each of these students grows in their individual skill, experience, and success!” said Head Coach Charissa Smith. Assistant Coach Becky Ritta agreed, saying, “Overall, we’re a pretty young team, but the students are enthusiastic. I’m very excited to watch them grow throughout the season, and I’m anticipating great things!” Assistant Coach Ruth Ferris was quick to point out what it takes to be successful in speech: “Successful speech takes commitment from each of the team members. To do well, students need to work hard each week to improve. A victorious result is more than just medals–it is the life skill of communication.”

The team has already competed in two meets: Adams Central on January 9 and CNFL1 on January 16. At Adams Central, Danae Burdett placed 4th in Novice Persuasive, and Madison Felt placed 4th in Novice Serious Prose. At CNFL1, Burdett placed 4th in Novice Persuasive, and Sophie Guo and Corina Ge placed 1st in Novice Duet. Next up is Thayer Central at Hebron on January 23.
