Seniors Skype with Author

On Tuesday morning, October 6, the senior Bible class welcomed a very special guest. Warren Cole Smith, co-author of the book Restoring All Things, had the chance to interact with the students, answering questions and giving advice, even though he was over one thousand miles away. Smith may not have been physically present, but through the convenient video chat service Skype, it seemed as if he was actually there in the room.

Throughout the first quarter, the seniors read through Restoring All Things, which Smith co-authored with John Stonestreet. As stated on the front cover, this book’s main focus is on “God’s Audacious Plan to Change the World through Everyday People.” By using the true stories of these “everyday people,” Stonestreet and Smith highlight big cultural issues such as homosexuality and abortion in which God is actively at work. For example, in the chapter devoted to the issue of abortion, the book outlines the multiple ways pregnancy care centers are impacting the anti-abortion movement across the nation, using the real life stories of women they helped. Throughout the book, readers are challenged to be active in their faith and not to sit back, content to simply watch and stay silent. The seniors especially found this to be insightful, as many of them will be heading off into secular universities and colleges where their beliefs will be challenged and ridiculed. Smith himself told the class to be prepared for what’s ahead and to be willing to serve as good ambassadors for Christ in whatever environment He places them in.

Skyping with Warren Cole Smith gave the seniors a chance to ask unanswered questions from the book and to hear more in-depth about ideas that were presented throughout the pages. At the end of the class period, the seniors applauded Smith, thanking him for taking the time not only to talk with them, but also for writing such a compelling book.
