Testing Proficiency

High school students often take the ACT and/or SAT as part of the college admissions process. Our international students are no different–but they also take an additional test, the TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language). On Saturday, September 26th, international students Philip Nguyen (12), Kyle Kim (10) and JiHa Kim (10) completed the TOEFL test in Kearney. The TOEFL is a standardized test of English language proficiency for non-native English language speakers who desire to enroll in U.S. universities. One of the major English-language tests in the world, the TOEFL test is comprised of four parts that can demonstrate the English skills of the participant: reading, listening, writing, and speaking. Many of NC’s international students will take the TOEFL multiple times before graduation.

When asked about the TOEFL test, Kyle Kim said, “I had prepared for this test for almost three months, but I still had a hard time with the reading section of the test. But in general I did my best, so I expect a higher score than last year. Also, I learned a great lesson about managing your physical condition and how it can affect your test score.” Another student, JiHa Kim said, “I think I did well on most parts of the test, but I kind of regret that I didn’t study more vocabulary for the test.”
