On Friday, March 28, nine Nebraska Christian students competed at State Speech in Kearney on the UNK Campus. Attending the meet were Makenna Loy, Madi Fuehrer, Tommy Flynn, Marilla Flynn, and Talitha Harrington in OID, Dan Tran and Nhung Phan in Duet, Beran Fisher in Informative, and Scott Smith in Persuasive and Extemp.

The students walked out of their rounds saying that it was the best they had done all season, but that the competition was fierce. Only the top six make finals in each event, and Scott Smith was among those six in both of his events. He placed fifth in Persuasive, and was the State Champion in Extemp. Assistant Coach Becky Ritta said, “Scott has worked so hard, not only this year, but throughout his speech career. It was so exciting to see him go out on top!”

When asked about the day as a whole, Head Coach Charissa Smith stated: “Going into the day, I felt that we were ready. We had done everything we could to prepare! Overall, I was hopeful and excited to see the results start coming in!”

Congratulations to Scott Smith on being the State Champion in Extemp and to all those students who competed at State Speech!
